This thing, the Ford Versailles, sold in South America.
It has a touch of a 1980s Passat four door, which isn’t surprising because that’s what it was based on.
The Vers
aill
es replaced the Del R
ey which replaced the Corcel II and before that the Corcel I, all
of which were based on the Renault 12 and actually precede
d it
, because why not and car production in Latin America is a complicated and confusing process.

What about this, the Lincoln Versailles, sold in America?
Born of the big American downsizing craze of the early 80s, designed to be a mini Town Car but you could tell me it’s a mini Cadillac Fleetwood and I’d believe you.

That front end looks better than the original
I love the third-world old cars with new faces

Or this, which I had never previously heard of.
Or this, of which I’ve never seen a second.

What about it? Well, it’s hideous for a start. Did anyone buy one and why?

There’s a touch of the later
Mk3 Granada and Mk5 Escort about it as well.

When it comes to weird South American Fords, I don’t think anything can beat the introduced-in-1960 Falcon, which was sold until 1992.
The facelift job reminds me a lot of the Mk5 Cortina. Probably intentional.

I just find it absolutely hilarious that two cars were named after one of the worst treaties ever written and signed.

Its a gussied up Grenada, and it really shows you where Ford was in the industry at the time when ads touted its “classic styling” from the start (eg, it already looked 10 years old when it was brand spanking new).

I would assume they were actually named after the extravagantly luxurious palace, where the treaties were signed.

Argentine Falcons are freaking badass. Would love to have a low mileage ‘92 in the States.

80s? That thing is from the 1980s? It looks much older. I would’ve guessed late 60s, early 70s.
